Codes P0087, P0088 and P0093 all report a gap between the pressure measured in the rail and the pressure the ECU asked for. They do not name a part: they describe a symptom. A good diagnosis compares actual and target pressure, then works along the circuit from the tank to the injectors.
What each code means
- P0087 – Rail pressure too low: actual pressure stays below the target. It is the most common, often with hard starting or limp mode.
- P0088 – Rail pressure too high: pressure exceeds the target. The ECU often cuts power to protect the system.
- P0093 – Large leak detected: the ECU sees a pressure drop or abnormal calculated consumption, which it reads as a leak.
The exact wording and detection conditions vary by vehicle and injection system manufacturer. Always record the full code, its freeze-frame data and the description given by the diagnostic tool.
P0087: causes to check, from cheapest to most expensive
- Low-pressure supply: clogged fuel filter, air in the system, an air leak, weak lift pump, nearly empty tank or poor-quality diesel.
- Metering unit or regulator: flow control valve or pressure regulator sticking, badly supplied or badly driven.
- Internal injector leak: too much back-leak stops the pump from holding pressure. The back-leak test identifies it.
- Worn high-pressure pump: only consider it after ruling out the causes above.
P0088: when pressure goes too high
- Pressure regulator stuck closed or badly driven (wiring, connector, ECU signal).
- Faulty rail pressure sensor sending a wrong value: compare its voltage with the expected value with the engine off.
- Blocked or pinched fuel return line.
- Metering unit stuck open on systems regulated at the pump.
P0093: finding the leak
- Visual inspection with the engine off: high-pressure unions, pipes, rail, sensor and pressure relief valve. A wet trace or a smell of diesel guides the search.
- Injector back-leak test: an injector returning clearly more than the others can trigger this code.
- Pressure relief valve (on systems that have one): if it does not close again, pressure drops sharply.
- Sensor plausibility: an unstable pressure sensor can look like a leak.
Never loosen a high-pressure union with the engine running or just after stopping it. Wait for the pressure drop specified by the manufacturer: a high-pressure diesel jet can penetrate skin.
Live data to record before ordering any part
- Actual and target rail pressure at cranking, idle, 2,500 rpm and under full acceleration.
- Current or duty cycle of the metering unit and regulator.
- Per-cylinder flow corrections at idle.
- Fuel and engine temperature when the fault occurs.
Actual pressure that lags the target under acceleration but is fine at idle points to the supply or the pump. A gap that appears when hot points more to an internal injector leak. For injector tests in detail, see also our article on common-rail fault symptoms.
